A simplified strategy for testing thyroid function.

چکیده
We assessed a new strategy for thyroid-function testing that involves simultaneous measurement of free thyroxin and thyrotropin, both in singletons, with chemiluminescent assays. Using our current strategy of measuring free thyroxin as a first-line test with selected back-up testing, the results show that, of 810 patients without previous thyroid disease, 445 received back-up tests. Of these, 345 were euthyroid, whereas 63 classified as euthyroid and not selected for further testing in fact had abnormal back-up test results. Evidently the simultaneous measurement of free thyroxin and thyrotropin with the "Magic Lite" technology greatly improves diagnostic efficiency compared with this current strategy.

IMPACT OF IODIZED OIL INJECTION DURING PREGNANCY ON THYROID FUNCTION TESTS OF OFFSPRINGS
Previous studies have shown that injection of iodized oil in pregnant women can be used as a prophylactic strategy for iodine deficiency disorders and may improve the growth indices of their offspring. Since administration of pharmacological doses of iodine may lead occasionally to large goiter and rarely to hypothyroidism, in the present study the thyroid function tests of neonates and inf...

متن کاملReciprocal Association between Thyroid Function and Metabolic Syndrome: A Review Article
Introduction: Thyroid dysfunction can impair fat and glucose metabolism, blood pressure, and body weight. On the other hand, metabolic syndrome (MetS) can be associated with an increased risk of hypothyroidism. Due to the high prevalence of both disorders and the possibility of synergistic metabolic detrimental consequences in combination, this review study aimed to investigate the reciprocal a...
متن کاملEvaluation of strategy for testing thyroid function applied to hypothyroidism.
A strategy for testing thyroid function with discretionary assay of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) following initial measurement of total plasma thyroxine (tT4) was retrospectively evaluated in relation to the diagnosis of primary hypothyroidism. Over a two year period 14 641 tT4 assays were done and 6887 TSH assays, of which 29% were initiated in the laboratory. The percentage of raised TSH...
متن کاملFrequency of Thyroid Function Disorders among a Population of Very-Low-Birth-Weight Premature Infants
Background: Thyroid function disorders, particularly congenital hypothyroidism (CHT), are important endocrine dysfunctions associated with permanent morbidities. CHT is more prevalent among preterm low-birth-weight neonates compared to term infants with normal weight. Methods: This prospective cohort study was conducted on 126 very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) neonates referred to the neonatal inten...
